Chapter 9

PART 9
Linda broke before Daniel did.
Not from guilt.
From losing status.
The prosecutor showed her text messages.
Emma is getting bold.
Daniel needs to correct this before she embarrasses us.
Frank is useless.
Make sure she does not call anyone tonight.
Linda tried to say she meant emotional correction.
Then the video played again.
Her voice in the kitchen answered for her.
Maybe now she’ll finally learn her place.
The jury watched her elegance collapse under her own words.
Frank testified next.
He cried.
Emma did not forgive him for the tears.
But she listened.
He admitted he had heard more than he said.
He admitted he turned up the television.
He admitted he was afraid of Linda, afraid of Daniel, afraid of losing the family structure that had made him comfortable.
The prosecutor asked, “Were you more afraid of discomfort than of Emma being hurt?”
Frank closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
That answer mattered.
Cowardice rarely names itself.
When Daniel finally took the stand against his lawyer’s advice, Emma knew why.
He could not bear being described by others.
He needed control of the story.
He said Emma exaggerated.
He said the burn was an accident.
He said the camera setup proved she was plotting.
The prosecutor asked one question.
“If it was an accident, why did you not call 911?”
Daniel’s mouth opened.
No answer.
The verdict came two days later.
Guilty on the main assault charge.
Guilty on violation of protective order.
Guilty on witness intimidation.
Linda was convicted of accessory and coercion-related charges.
Frank avoided prison through cooperation, but the judge told him his silence had been part of the violence.
Emma did not cheer.
She walked out of the courthouse with Chloe beside her and sunlight on her face.
A reporter asked if she felt justice had been served.
Emma looked at her bandaged hand.
Then at the courthouse doors.
“Justice started when someone finally watched.”
May you like
Then she left without saying more.
