Chapter 2

PART 2

Emma had not always been afraid of her kitchen.

In the beginning, she loved it.

The warm pendant lights.

The wide marble island.

The polished cabinets.

The little breakfast corner where she once believed marriage could be ordinary and safe.

Daniel bought the house two months after their wedding.

Or at least, that was what everyone said.

In truth, Emma’s savings paid the closing costs.

Her job covered the renovations when Daniel’s construction business slowed.

Her credit repaired the mortgage when Daniel missed payments and blamed the bank.

But Linda still walked through the front door every Sunday and said, “My son gave you all this.”

Emma corrected her once.

Only once.

Linda smiled and said, “A wife who keeps score is not a wife for long.”

Daniel laughed then.

That laugh taught Emma more than the sentence did.

Frank never said much.

He sat in the living room and let Linda rule the house like a queen whose crown was made of guilt.

At first, Daniel’s cruelty came disguised as frustration.

A slammed cabinet.

A cold stare.

A hand gripping Emma’s arm too tightly in the hallway.

Then apologies came.

Flowers.

Coffee.

A promise that stress made him someone he was not.

Emma believed that because she wanted to live with the husband she had married, not the stranger who appeared after dinner.

Then Linda moved in after “a small back injury.”

She healed in two weeks.

She stayed eight months.

Daniel became worse with an audience.

Linda praised him when he controlled Emma.

Frank looked away when he heard things break.

Emma stopped inviting friends over.

Stopped wearing sleeveless tops.

Stopped answering questions honestly.

Then one night, Daniel pushed her against the pantry door because she had changed the Wi-Fi password after finding hidden cameras in the hallway.

That was when Emma called Detective Chloe Parker.

Not the police emergency line.

Chloe.

Her college roommate.

Now a detective.

Emma said only one sentence.

“I think I need help before he kills me.”

Chloe did not ask why she had waited.

She asked, “Are you safe enough to make a plan?”

Emma looked at the glowing kitchen lights.

Then at Daniel’s shadow moving upstairs.

“No.”

May you like

“But I can pretend.”
