Chapter 6

PART 6

At the hospital, Emma gave her statement with her hand bandaged and Chloe sitting beside her.

Not touching.

Just there.

That mattered.

For years, Daniel had touched without asking.

Pulled.

Grabbed.

Held.

Stopped her from leaving rooms.

Emma had begun to think every hand near her body was a decision being taken away.

Chloe knew better.

She kept her hands folded and asked questions in a steady voice.

“When did the abuse start?”

Emma looked at the white blanket over her lap.

“Three years ago.”

“When did it become physical?”

“Two years ago.”

“When did Linda move in?”

“Eight months ago.”

“When did Frank first witness violence?”

Emma closed her eyes.

“The first week she moved in.”

Chloe paused.

“Did he ever help?”

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

“Did Linda ever encourage Daniel?”

Emma laughed once.

It came out broken.

“She trained him.”

The doctor documented the burn.

Then the older injuries.

A fading bruise on Emma’s upper arm.

A scar near her shoulder.

Tender ribs from two weeks earlier.

Each mark became a line in a report.

Each line became harder for Daniel to explain.

At 2:13 a.m., Chloe returned with news.

Daniel had been charged.

Linda too.

Not just as a witness.

As a participant.

Frank had not been charged yet.

But he had been warned that lying would make him part of the cover-up.

Emma stared at the ceiling.

“What did he say?”

“Frank?”

Emma nodded.

Chloe’s expression changed.

“He said he saw Daniel force your hand.”

Emma began to cry then.

Not because Frank had saved her.

He had not.

Not because he had suddenly become brave.

He had not.

She cried because after all those years, one person inside that house finally admitted the truth out loud.

Chloe waited until the tears slowed.

Then she placed a sealed plastic bag on the side table.

Inside was the hidden camera device.

Emma looked at it.

Small.

Cheap.

Almost ridiculous.

A tiny blue light had done what her screams never could.

May you like

It made them witnesses.
