Chapter 8

PART 8

Court did not look like justice at first.

It looked like waiting.

Plastic chairs.

Cold hallways.

Files stacked on tables.

Daniel in a suit pretending he was gentle.

Linda in pearls pretending she was devastated.

Frank sitting behind the prosecutor, looking ten years older than he had in the living room.

Emma wore a long-sleeved navy dress to the first hearing.

Not to hide the bandage.

To feel like herself.

Daniel’s lawyer argued the video lacked context.

Chloe played it.

The courtroom watched Daniel force Emma’s hand toward the glowing burner.

They heard his voice.

Maybe this will teach you not to ruin my dinner.

They heard Linda.

Maybe now she’ll finally learn her place.

They saw Frank look away.

No one asked for context after that.

Daniel stared at the table.

Linda stared at Emma.

Frank stared at his own hands.

Then the hidden camera angle changed.

The footage showed Emma pressing the button under the island.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

It showed the police lights.

It captured Daniel asking, “What did you do?”

It captured Emma saying, “Smile for the camera, Daniel.”

The prosecutor paused the video there.

The courtroom was silent.

Emma did not feel powerful.

Powerful was not the word.

She felt present.

That was more important.

For years, the worst moments of her life had happened in rooms where nobody outside could see.

Now the room had expanded.

Judge.

Jury.

Detective.

Reporters.

Court clerk.

Every eye on the truth Daniel had called private.

When Emma testified, Daniel did not look at her at first.

Then he did.

That old look appeared.

The one that used to make her apologize for breathing wrong.

Emma felt fear move through her body.

Then pass.

She kept speaking.

She told them about the kitchen.

The balcony.

The money.

The threats.

The miscarriage.

The silence.

When the defense asked why she had stayed, Emma looked at the jury.

“Because leaving a violent man is not a door.”

“It is a hallway full of locks.”

May you like

“And I was opening them one by one.”
