PART 5
The paramedic wrapped Emma’s hand while Daniel shouted in the hallway.
He shouted that Emma was unstable.
He shouted that she trapped him.
He shouted that wives were ruining men with cameras now.
Every word made Chloe’s case easier.
Linda tried a softer performance.
She sat at the kitchen table with both hands around her wine glass and let tears gather in her eyes.
“My daughter-in-law has always been sensitive.”
“She misunderstands discipline.”
Chloe looked at her.
“Discipline?”
Linda blinked.
The word had escaped before she dressed it.
Frank stared at the floor.
Officer Grant asked him what he saw.
Frank’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Linda turned sharply.
“Frank.”
One word.
A leash.
Frank closed his mouth.
Emma watched from the kitchen island, pain rolling up her arm in sick waves.
But beneath it, something else grew.
Not hope yet.
Hope was too bright.
This was survival becoming real.
Chloe came to her side.
“Emma, I need to ask.”
“Do you want medical transport?”
Emma nodded.
Then looked at Daniel.
He was in handcuffs now.
He had stopped shouting.
His face had gone pale and tight.
“Emma,” he said.
There it was.
The voice.
Soft.
Almost human.
The voice that had pulled her back after every injury.
“I lost control.”
Emma looked at him.
“No.”
Her own voice surprised her.
“You had control.”
“You used it.”
The room went still.
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
The mask slipped.
“You think anyone will believe this was all me?”
Chloe answered before Emma could.
“The camera does.”
Officer Grant bagged the wine glass.
Another officer photographed the stove.
A third collected Emma’s phone.
Linda stood.
“You cannot take our things.”
Chloe turned.
“We can preserve evidence.”
Linda’s voice sharpened.
“This is my son’s home.”
Emma looked up.
“No.”
“It is mine too.”
Linda looked at her then with hatred.
Not surprise.
Hatred.
Because Emma was still speaking.
Because pain had not made her obedient.
