Chapter 1

PART 1

He burned his wife’s hand on the stove to teach her a lesson… then she pressed the hidden camera button under the island.

Daniel forced Emma’s trembling hand toward the glowing red burner while his mother watched with a glass of wine.

The kitchen smelled like roasted chicken, spilled wine, and fear.

Emma’s knees buckled against the marble island.

Her cream sweater slipped from one shoulder.

Her hair stuck to her tear-wet face.

Daniel leaned close, his grip hard around her wrist.

“Maybe this will teach you not to ruin my dinner.”

Emma’s breath broke in her throat.

Behind him, Linda smiled like she was watching a child finally learn manners.

Frank sat in the living room with the television remote in his hand, pretending the volume was louder than Emma’s pain.

It was not.

He heard everything.

He just chose the couch.

Daniel released her only after she collapsed against the island.

Emma pulled her injured hand to her chest and pressed her lips together to keep from screaming.

Linda stepped closer, red wine shining in her glass.

“Maybe now she’ll finally learn her place.”

Emma looked at her mother-in-law through tears.

For three years, Linda had called cruelty tradition.

Daniel had called violence discipline.

Frank had called silence peace.

Tonight, all three of them thought Emma had finally broken.

They did not know she had stopped crying days ago.

They did not know Detective Chloe Parker was already waiting for one final signal.

They did not know about the small camera button hidden under the marble island, disguised as a USB port.

Emma slid her uninjured hand beneath the counter.

Her fingers searched blindly.

Daniel grabbed her shoulder.

“What are you doing?”

Emma found the button.

She pressed it once.

Twice.

Three times.

A tiny blue light blinked and disappeared.

Emma lifted her eyes to Daniel.

Her voice was weak, but it cut through the kitchen.

“I wasn’t reaching for a bandage.”

Daniel’s cruel smile faded.

At that moment, red and blue lights flickered across the kitchen window.

Emma’s phone vibrated on the counter.

Detective Chloe Parker’s calm voice came through the speaker.

“Live feed confirmed.”

“Officers are at the door.”

Daniel’s face drained of color.

Emma stared at him from the floor.

May you like

“Smile for the camera, Daniel.”
