Chapter 4

PART 4

Daniel heard the sirens before he understood the phone.

That was the first sign his control was breaking.

His eyes moved from Emma’s face to the counter.

Then to the window.

Then to the underside of the marble island.

“What did you do?”

Emma stayed on the floor.

Her injured hand shook against her chest.

Her other hand gripped the cabinet handle to keep herself upright.

Linda lowered her wine glass.

The red liquid trembled against the rim.

Frank finally turned off the television.

For years, Frank’s silence had been his shield.

Now silence had nowhere to hide.

The front doorbell rang.

Not a polite ring.

A hard one.

Police.

Daniel stepped back from Emma.

Then forward again.

He did not know whether to run, apologize, or destroy the phone.

That confusion saved her.

Emma kept her eyes on him.

“If you touch the phone, they will see that too.”

Daniel froze.

Linda found her voice.

“This is a family matter.”

Detective Chloe Parker’s voice came through the phone again.

“Emma, stay where you are.”

“Officers are entering.”

Daniel turned toward the hallway.

“No one is entering my house.”

The front door opened.

It had been unlocked because Linda hated getting up to answer it.

Officer Grant entered first.

Two uniformed officers followed.

Detective Chloe came behind them in a dark coat, calm and focused, her eyes going straight to Emma.

Daniel lifted his hands.

“She burned herself.”

Emma did not speak.

Chloe looked at the stove.

The glowing burner.

The wine glass.

Frank’s remote.

The phone on the counter.

Daniel’s handprint reddening on Emma’s wrist.

Then she looked at Daniel.

“Step away from her.”

Daniel laughed once.

A desperate, ugly sound.

“You have no idea what happened.”

Chloe held up her phone.

“Yes, we do.”

“The live feed showed everything.”

Linda’s face changed.

Frank stood too quickly and knocked the remote to the floor.

Daniel looked at the marble island like it had betrayed him.

No.

Emma thought.

It had finally told the truth.
