Chapter 7

PART 7

Daniel was released on bail three days later.

That frightened Emma more than the arrest had relieved her.

Chloe warned her before the call came.

“He cannot contact you.”

“He cannot return to the house.”

“He cannot go near your workplace.”

Emma nodded at every rule.

Rules sounded strong on paper.

But Daniel had broken stronger things than paper.

The protective order arrived at noon.

Daniel violated it by 4:06 p.m.

He sent an email from an old business account.

You ruined my life.

You think the camera saved you?

Wait until court hears who you really are.

Emma read it once.

Then forwarded it to Chloe.

No reply.

No explanation.

No trembling apology.

That was new.

Daniel was taken back into custody before dinner.

Linda called Frank from her sister’s house and screamed so loudly that Frank finally called the police himself.

That was new too.

Frank moved into a motel and gave a full statement the next morning.

He admitted Linda mocked Emma for being childless after Daniel caused her miscarriage during a fight.

He admitted Daniel once locked Emma on the balcony in winter.

He admitted Linda told him, “A woman who stays deserves what teaches her.”

Emma heard that last sentence in Chloe’s office and felt the old shame rise.

A woman who stays.

People love asking why women stay.

They rarely ask who made leaving dangerous.

Daniel controlled money.

Linda controlled reputation.

Frank controlled silence.

Together, they had made the house look normal from the outside.

The kitchen had flowers.

The living room had soft music.

The driveway had trimmed hedges.

And inside, Emma counted exits.

The prosecutor explained the charges two weeks later.

Assault.

Domestic violence.

Coercive control evidence.

Witness intimidation.

Accessory liability for Linda.

Potential charges for Frank depending on cooperation.

Emma asked only one question.

“Will the video be enough?”

The prosecutor looked at her.

“The video opens the door.”

“Your testimony walks through it.”

Emma looked down at her bandaged hand.

For years, Daniel told her no one would believe her.

Now the truth was asking her to stand up and prove him wrong.
