Chapter 3

PART 3

The hidden button was installed by a man who pretended to repair the dishwasher.

His name was Officer Grant.

Daniel never noticed him.

Men like Daniel looked at uniforms and threats, not ordinary workers with tool bags.

Linda watched him from the breakfast table and complained about the cost.

Frank asked whether the dishwasher would finally stop making noise during television.

Emma stood beside the sink with her arms folded, praying Daniel would not come home early.

Officer Grant worked beneath the marble island for nineteen minutes.

When he left, there was a tiny USB-style port under the edge of the counter.

It looked useless.

That was the point.

Press once, it recorded.

Press twice, it transmitted.

Press three times, it triggered the emergency live feed Chloe had arranged through a domestic violence unit.

Emma practiced with cold fingers after midnight.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The light blinked and vanished.

Chloe’s voice came through Emma’s phone.

“If you ever press it for real, do not explain.”

“Do not threaten.”

“Do not warn him.”

“Survive until we arrive.”

Emma whispered, “What if I freeze?”

“Then freeze near the button.”

The plan was supposed to catch Daniel threatening her.

Maybe grabbing her.

Maybe breaking something.

Emma had not imagined the stove.

Even after everything, part of her still believed there was a line he would not cross.

Linda erased that belief at dinner.

Emma had made roast chicken.

Daniel said it was dry.

Linda sipped wine and said a woman who could not feed a man should not expect a man to stay loyal.

Emma stared at her plate.

Frank turned up the television.

Daniel asked why she was quiet.

Emma said, “Because I’m tired of being punished for food you don’t pay for.”

The room went silent.

Linda smiled slowly.

Daniel stood.

Emma saw the shift in his face.

Not anger arriving.

Permission arriving.

He grabbed her wrist and dragged her toward the stove.

Linda did not stop him.

Frank did not stand.

The burner glowed red.

Emma understood then.

Chloe had been right.

Do not warn him.

May you like

Survive until we arrive.
